How Electrolysis Works

Understanding the science of permanent hair removal

What is Electrolysis?

The only FDA-approved method for permanent hair removal

Electrolysis is a proven method of permanent hair removal that has been safely used for over 140 years. It works by inserting a very fine probe (about the width of a hair) into the natural opening of the hair follicle alongside the hair shaft.

A small amount of electrical current is then applied to destroy the hair growth cells. This process, when performed correctly by a trained professional, permanently prevents that hair from growing back.

Unlike temporary hair removal methods like shaving, waxing, or even laser hair removal, electrolysis is the only method recognized by the FDA as providing permanent hair removal.

Electrolysis technology

The Science Behind Electrolysis

Three proven methods for permanent results

Galvanic

Uses direct current to create a chemical reaction that destroys the hair growth cells

Thermolysis

Uses alternating current to create heat that destroys the hair growth cells

Blend

Combines both galvanic and thermolysis methods for optimal effectiveness

At Lily Lane Electrolysis, we use advanced Apilus technology that employs the most effective method for your specific hair and skin type, ensuring optimal results with maximum comfort.

The Treatment Process

What to expect during your electrolysis journey

1

Initial Consultation

We'll assess your hair growth, discuss your goals, and create a personalized treatment plan. This consultation is free and helps us understand your unique needs.

2

First Treatment

During your first session, we'll begin treating the area. You'll experience the process firsthand and we'll adjust for your comfort level.

3

Regular Sessions

Hair grows in cycles, so multiple sessions are needed to treat all follicles. We'll schedule regular appointments based on your hair growth pattern.

4

Completion

Once all follicles have been treated through their growth cycles, you'll enjoy permanent results. No more unwanted hair!

Why Multiple Sessions Are Needed

Understanding hair growth cycles

Hair growth cycles

Hair grows in three distinct phases:

  • Anagen (Growth Phase): The hair is actively growing and connected to the blood supply. This is the ideal time for treatment.
  • Catagen (Transition Phase): The hair stops growing and detaches from the blood supply.
  • Telogen (Resting Phase): The hair rests before eventually falling out, and a new hair begins to grow.

Since only hairs in the anagen phase can be permanently treated, and not all hairs are in this phase at the same time, multiple sessions are necessary to treat all follicles as they cycle through the growth phase.

The number of sessions needed varies based on the treatment area, hair density, and individual hair growth patterns. During your consultation, we'll provide a realistic timeline for your specific situation.

Electrolysis vs. Other Hair Removal Methods

Why electrolysis is the superior choice

Electrolysis

  • FDA-approved permanent removal
  • Works on all hair colors
  • Works on all skin tones
  • Treats individual hairs
  • Truly permanent results

Laser Hair Removal

  • Not FDA-approved as permanent
  • Limited to dark hair only
  • Not safe for all skin tones
  • Treats larger areas quickly
  • Results may not be permanent

Temporary Methods

  • Shaving: Daily maintenance
  • Waxing: Painful, temporary
  • Depilatory creams: Harsh chemicals
  • Threading: Temporary results
  • Ongoing cost and time
